What we are building

A steel house with two walls of glass

A Honomobo HO3 — 1,120 square feet, two bed, two bath, black steel — built in a factory in Canada and set on a graded pad on fourteen acres. Two full-height walls of glass, and the living-room wall folds all the way open onto the deck.

Fourteen private acres north of Highway 62, with mountains on the horizon and very little light for miles.

Off-grid on purpose

Solar with battery storage. Clean, quiet, and completely seamless.

The build

Mostly compaction

The pad gets built up and tested in lifts. The land is graded, and the module is in the factory.

  1. Orange survey paint and wooden stakes marking the house footprint on undisturbed desert ground.

    Survey paint on raw ground. First time the footprint existed anywhere but a drawing.

  2. A skid steer and an excavator cutting the building pad, throwing up a large cloud of dust.
    02 · Cutting

    Two machines, one afternoon, most of the pad.

  3. The cut bank of the excavated pad, topsoil stripped back to firm ground.
    03 · Topsoil off

    The bank coming down to grade.

  4. A worker driving a test hammer into the graded pad during a soil compaction test.
    04 · Compaction

    Testing the fill to 95% compaction. The whole house sits on this.

    Fill goes back in layers, each one compacted before the next.
